Desert Island List: Maria Lianos – Writer, Mother, Rocker

by mochadad

Music has always been an important part of my life. I started playing the piano when I was 6 years old and was trained in classical music. That training helped me to develop a good ear for music.

I can honestly say I appreciate all types of music, but I tend to prefer rock music – especially alternative rock. Here is a list of my favourite albums of all time (in no particular order):

1. Appetite for Destruction, Guns ‘N’ Roses – When I listen to some of this album,  it brings me back to when I was 15, listening to Axl Rose on my yellow Sony Walkman as I strutted down Yonge Street in Toronto, daydreaming about hanging out with rock bands … but of course I didn’t know back then what that exactly meant so luckily I didn’t turn into a groupie ;)

2. Nevermind, Nirvana – Oh how I loved (and still love) this album. Nevermind was responsible for bringing alternative rock to a large mainstream audience, and critics subsequently regarded it as one of the best rock albums of all time. It was the beginning of the Grunge period and has changed the sound of alternative rock forever.

3. And Justice For All, Metallica and 4. Metallica (the Black Album) – These Metallica albums have stood the test of time and are is still  my favorites. Whenever I feel like that full, hard metal rock experience, I listen to these albums.

5. Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin – The epitome of classic rock. ‘Nuff said.

6. Crisis, Alexisonfire – This awesome punk rock band from Canada floors me with their punk/screamo music and the incredible voice of Dallas Green, who I love to listen to in his toned-down, folky band, City and Colour.

7. Are You Experienced?, Jimi Hendrix – Oh Jimi… Jimi what can I say about Jimi?  His electric guitar speaks to my heart and soul! He’s my all-time favourite electric guitar player. Ever.

8. The Clash, The Clash – This was my first introduction to punk rock (along with the Ramones).  I was hooked ever since I first listened to this album. They are still probably the best punk rock band ever.

9. Back in Black, AC/DC – You Shook Me All Night Long has to be one of the best rock songs of all time!

10. The Joshua Tree, U2 – This was a huge album of my childhood (along with Michael Jackson’s Thriller).  Still a classic.

Maria Lianos is publisher/editor of www.amotherworld.com, an online magazine for the modern mother.  She is the mother of two and still a rocker!
